Cross-step Waltz

A relaxed, mid-tempo waltz with an easy rhythm and smooth flow, as revived by Richard Powers. See a sample here. Different from slow ballroom waltz in that it has more continuous travel and open and promenade figures, and not much closed position or rise-and-fall.

Newcomer:

Introducing the foundations up to the turning basic, so that you may continue on with grace and ease. Gets you moving early, so you feel like you’re dancing.

Beyond-Beginning:

Building on the basics, we start on some turning variations and break out of the frame. Different material each session.

Int/Adv:

Some trickier figures that may include such things as rhythm changes, shadow, dips, and more. Different material each session.

Nightclub Two-Step

A good dance for beginners. Relatively simple rhythm with wonderful potential for variety and style, and danced to a wide range of musical genres. There are (at least) three versions of nightclub, and they are all perfectly good, but I focus on Buddy Schwimmer’s rock-step-side.

Newcomer:

The need-to-know basics to get out there and start dancing, even if it’s just in your kitchen. Focus on rhythm and connection.

Beyond-Beginning:

This is where things start getting interesting! Fun and road-tested patterns as well as lead/follow technique. Different material each session.

Int/Adv:

For those who have a nice complement of figures under their belt and are ready to level up. These classes may include such things as rhythm changes, shadow, dips, styling, and more. Different material each session.

Hustle

Hustle is energetic but smooth, and much lighter than it looks. Hustle is traditionally danced to disco music, but it can also be danced to some trance, electronica, and pop.

Newcomer:

Start with the easier 4-count rhythm and introductory figures to get you dancing, then upgrade to the faster standard 3-count rhythm. Focus on connection and the underlying structure of the dance.

Beyond-Beginning:

Build on the basics in the 3-count rhythm, and start adding more figures.
